Sonokeling rosewood trees (Dalbergia latifolia) are comparatively rare in their natural habitat, thus 90 % of all timber comes from plantations established by the Dutch on Java and in Indonesia. Sonokeling is the name for cultivated East Indian rosewood. Presumably because of different climate and growth conditions this wood is having a broader colour range than the East Indian species, being lighter in colour, brown with blackish streaks to sometimes greenish dark brown or light violet colour. This attractive hard and heavy timber is widely used for cabinet making, high end furniture, flooring, musical instruments, luxury interior and exterior joinery. Sonokeling rosewood works well with machine or hand tools and finishes smoothly. This wood is very hard to find in timber trade. Due to export restrictions for raw timber these pieces were cut from legally exported wood in form of profiled small rulers.
