Redwood Burls (Sequoia sempervirens) come from the huge Californian coastal redwood trees, where the burls are often found at the base of the trunk. These trees are the largest and longest living plants on earth, many of these gigantic trees reach a biblical age of up to 2000 years and can grow over 110 meters high under good conditions on the California coast. The wild-grained wood, which is often referred to as vavona, is very light (approx. 450 kg/m3) and relatively soft, but is extremely durable and weather-resistant, which is far superior to our native oak, for example: the wood often comes from the stumps of trunks felled around 1900 - the root stumps of such giants remain completely undecayed in the ground; today they are dug up and processed into burl wood!
