The London plane (Platanus x hispanica) is thought to be a hybrid of the Oriental Plane with the American Plane. It is extensively cultivated in most temperate latitudes as an ornamental and parkland tree, and is a commonly planted tree in cities throughout the temperate regions of the world. The attractive tall tree reaches heights up to 30 meters, the widespread crown develops on a relative short but thick trunk. The very typically grey to silvery-green bark flakes off in large patches and leaves the pale inner bark, which gives the stem a very special look. The fruits are typical, bristly balls with protruding hairs. Although the brownish wood is suitable for most indoor purposes, it is quite seldom used although it shows attractive grain patterns caused by radial rays that appear when quarter sawn and make the wood look like lacewood.
