Osage Orange Pen Blank 120 x 20 x 20 mm

Osage Orange trees (Maclura pomifera), also known as hedge or horse apple originate from Southern North America. Oklahoma state area was originally populated by Osage Indians, who recognized the woods superior properties for bows, war clubs, tools and handles and traded this valuable wood, as the Comanches did. In Arkansas in the 1840s a good Osage bow was worth a horse and a blanket. Exceptionally durability of the wood along with good properties as a windbreaker and natural hedge for farmland made it spread nearly all over the United States. The trees bear inedible large green "oranges" that have an almost citrus scent. The shiny vivid yellow-orange wood is bright, straight grained, very hard and dense, it takes a unique bright glossy polish on knife handles and is well suited for woodturning.
