Black palm wood comes from the Borassus or palm tree (Borassus flabellifer) from India and Southeast Asia. The wood of this palm tree, which can grow up to approx. 30 meters tall, is very hard and heavy. It consists of almost black, short bundles of fibers that look like black toothpicks embedded in a lighter, softer, foam-like mass ranging from brown to gray. Since the trunk of palm trees does not form a hard core as is usual with trees, but rather the hardness and density decrease from the outer layer to the inside, only the outermost hard ring area of the trunks can be processed. This means that the available cross-sections are very limited. During the Art Deco era, unique and extremely valuable furniture was veneered with end grain veneers, which were cut from such blocks with a circular saw like slices of salami.
