Olivewood (Olea europaea) comes from Mediterranean regions. The tree grows very slowly, can get thousands of years old, its wood is one of the most pleasant woods of the world. Colour and structure vary so much that it is hard to describe: the sapwood is creamy bright golden-yellow, the heartwood shows unique figures like fiddle back, burl and wavy structures in brown to rich greenish brown, reddish salmon pink colour, streaked with dark brown lines and has a very nice contrast. Due to its slow growth, the wood is hard and heavy, its limited availability makes it even more precious. Beautiful wide boards are available only when very old trees are cut down - when after a few hundred years the trees do not bear olives any more they are felled. The lumber than takes 10 to 20 years to dry. The wood has very fine texture and its a pleasure to work with because it cuts and carves very well.
