Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is the hardest and heaviest native wood, its great strength is really legendary. Besides that the wood is really very bright, only holly wood may be a little bit brighter. Due to its small size this wood is seldom harvested commercially for lumber, so Hornbeam is not available too often. The traditional use of hornbeam wood is for all sorts of tools, posts, beams, even railway sleepers were made from this extremely strong wood.
