Goncalvo Alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), also called Tigerwood, Muiracatiara or Jobillo, is a wood from the South American continent, its distribution ranges mainly from Mexico to Brazil. The occasionally growing tree provides very resistant and hard, heavy, very decorative wood, which is also attractive due to its striking light-dark contrast. The wood has excellent stiffness, strength, hardness and durability. The basic colour of the fine-grained and dense wood is reddish brown, it is mostly veined and streaked by striking dark brown stripes very irregularly, also spotted, hence the name Tigerwood. The weight is approx. 900 kg/m3. Goncalo Alves is used in shipbuilding, for floors, parquet, cut to veneers for furniture and interiors, for knife handles, tool handles, cues, turning and the like.
