Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora) has been one of the most prized woods of all for centuries, even the Egyptians used it for valuable works. Our ebony comes from West Africa, mostly Cameroon and Nigeria. The heartwood is usually deep black with no visible grain, occasionally dark brown or gray-brown streaks may be present. The wood is very dense and hard, has a fine and uniform grain with very high natural luster, it polishes beautifully.
Lighter streaks or spots are typical for ebony, flawless black is very rare and only found in about 10% of the wood. These colors are accepted on the market today and are more in demand as a sign of natural wood than black varnished wood. African ebony is one of the most expensive of all available woods and can only be processed crack-free after long, careful drying. Spec. weight approx. 1200 kg / m3, hardness very high, availability at present still good, but becoming increasingly scarce.
