Thuja in Germany almost always refers to the eastern arborvitae tree (Thuja occidentalis). It has little in common with the expensive and rare burls of the Cupresses Tetraclinis articulata from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The tree is native to eastern North America, but is widely spread all over Europe. The trees can get about 20 meters high, with slow growth they may reach 1 meter stem diameter. Living trees have a lightweighted, light yellow to reddish-brown heartwood, it is very durable and after careful drying dimensionally stable. Its smell is pleasantly ethereal, flowery and cedar-like, although the thujones contained in the fresh tree can have a poisonous and allergenic effect. The wood, rarely traded in Germany, is used for waterworks, boat building, fence posts and poles. The fine heartwood is appreciated by furniture carpenters because of its fragrant properties. In the USA, it is widely used in house construction under the name of white cedar, roofing shingles made of this wood are extremely durable and popular.
