Bigleaf maple, American or Oregon maple are names for the wood of the North American maple (Acer macrophyllum) that is growing along the Pacific Northwestern coast of America. These mighty trees get quite large and can develop logs up to 1.40 meters thick. The trees are fast growing and have remarkably large, delicate and finely ribbed leaves, which are typically measuring 35 x 25 cm. The wood of these giant trees have a large color bandwidth, it can can range from bright yellow golden hues, pale yellow to pink coral red, and even light brown hues can be found. Its colour is tending towoard redish colours than any other maple. The grain is sometimes very attractive textured with bubble or cloud patterns (quilted maple) or fine fiddleback. Burls can be found on this tree quite often, unfortunately the usability for larger works is limited by the fact that bark inclusions and cavities occur very often in those burls.
