Ash (fraxinus excelsior) trees are found in most parts of Europe, growing to be very large. Ash burl wood is swirly cream-coloured with burls and very attractive curly structure. Ash is a very hard and dense wood, yet quite flexible. Aged and mature trees develop a nice brown heartwood that resembles olive wood (Olive-ash). Particularly rare is ash burl, the finest wood of this species with wildly moving grain, bars, eyes and a silky sheen comes from France. Strongly wavy structures are striking, along with a delicate, marble-like grain pattern. Small black knots often appear as dots. Pure burl trunks are very rare and hard to find in ash trees! As is usual with almost all burl woods, defects such as inclusions, cavities, holes and drying cracks can occur, which can be easily and quickly filled with a drop of superglue.
