Maidou Burl (Pterocarpus cambodianus), also known as Golden Amboina, Mai Pradoo, Pradoo Burl, is a close relative of the real Amboina species, which it closely resembles. The medium-sized tree is only growing in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, and grows 15 to 20 meters high. Only very rarely the tree forms the typical burl structure on the stem, so that fine figured burl wood of this tree is a real rarity in the timber trade. The color spectrum of heartwood ranges from golden yellow-reddish, bright orange to brick red, it is surrounded by clearly demarcated light gray to pale yellow sapwood. The wood is generally a little bit lighter weighted, but its texture is even finer than its close relative Amboyna Burl, therefore it is reserved for small pieces of fine arts and crafts. For veneer production, the fine grained burl wood is much sought after, it equals Amboina and is rarely ever to be found on the timber market.
