American Whitewood, Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is also known as Yellow Poplar or Tulip Tree in its native habitat along the east coast of North America, where it grows into huge trees up to 60 meters high and 1.5 meters in diameter. These trees have a gigantic volume of useful wood, disturbing branches hardly occur. Striking features of the tree are the pyramid-shaped crown, the distinctive leaves are four-lobed and long-stalked, the yellow large flowers are reminiscent of tulips and gave the tree its name.
The wood of the tulip tree is relatively light and soft, resembling that of the poplar, it is excellent to work with, dimensionally stable, and has many uses: from plywood veneers to doors, windows, and lumber to furniture, pencils, and matches, this universal wood is used. Exemplary ease of machining has helped this high quality wood achieve the widest use. The heartwood can range in color from yellow to dark brown to green, the sapwood is usually a pale yellowish color. This wood changes its colour to dark brown by long light exposure! Wood is from a 1900s bed frame.
