Merawan, Ta-khian, Koki, Thingan (Hopea odorata) is a tree native to Southeast Asia, growing about 40 meters high and becoming very thick, which has its natural growing area in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The sapwood is light yellow in colour and little separated from the heartwood, which is yellow when fresh but changes to light brown or reddish brown when exposed to light. The wood is medium hard, has a weight of approx. 750 kg/m3 and dries easily. In Thailand people believe that a tree ghost named Lady Ta-khian lives in these trees. Like all tree spirits Nang Mai he plays an important role in religious life. The wood Merawan is used in many ways, e.g. for boat building, carvings, floor coverings, in carpentry and interior finishing, for railway sleepers, roofing, turnery, windows, and many other applications.
Small hairline cracks typical of burl wood can easily be filled with thin super glue.
