The Mirabelle tree (Prunus domestica ssp.syriaca), also called yellow plum, originates from minor Asia and was introduced to Europe from the 18th century on. The small trees, seldom exceeding 5-8 meters height, are decorative when flowering, the ripened fruits dominating the green leaves to an intensive bright yellow colour. The wood is very dense and quite hard, the colour ranges from pale yellow sapwood to yellow, pink and red heartwood. Because its great rarity there is nearly no traditional application for mirabelle wood, but the superior working properties make it a favorite to woodworkers where they can get it!
