Goldfield burls (Eucalyptus spp.) are named after a region around Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, where Gold was found around 1900. The name refers to this region more than to a specific tree, although these woods are members of the Eucalypt family. The wood is renowned for its rich colour, highly figured, tight and flawless grain pattern along with an extreme density and weight (ca. 1200 kg/m3). Unlike most Australian burls, Goldfield has no holes, gum pockets or cracks, making this wood perfectly suited for small and fine works of art, pens and knife handles. The colour varies from gray, brown or red through to light yellow with a light sapwood. As is usual with almost all burl woods, defects such as bark inclusions, cavities, holes and small drying cracks can occur, which can be easily and quickly filled with a drop of superglue.
