Makassar (Diospyros celebica) is a striking brown and black striped ebony named after its main port of export on the island of Celebes (now Sulawesi), eastern Indonesia. With its striped appearance, this extremely attractive and highly decorative wood belongs to the colored ebony woods and is highly sought after for high-quality interiors as well as for arts and crafts work. In its mechanical properties it is very similar to black ebony, but is many times rarer and therefore more expensive than black ebony - Makassar is one of the most expensive and exclusive spought after woods in the trade.
