Grenadill, also known as African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon), belongs to the rosewood family and comes mainly from Mozambique, East Africa. It's colour is dark, purplish brown with black streaks, producing an ebony appearance. It is a very dense, hard and heavy (ca. 1400 kg/m3) wood. It is slightly oily with fine texture and it finishes exceptionally well, hardly requiring any finish. It is used mailnly for woodwind instruments, primarily for clarinets.
