Grenadill (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is often mistakenly called Granadillo or Ebony, but belongs to the rosewood family. It comes mainly from Mozambique, East Africa. It's colour is dark purplish brown with black streaks, giving a nearly black effect. It is an exceptionally dense, very hard and heavy (ca. 1400 kg/m3), and is slightly oily with a fine texture. It finishes exceptionally well and really does not require any finish. It is mainly used for woodwind instruments, most of which are clarinets. Grenadill is also well suited for applications where ebony is not available in large dimensions.
