The fig tree (Ficus carica) grows throughout the Mediterranean region and for a long time was the epitome of the dream of the south - in 1770 Frederick the Great erected in his castle Sanssouci a glassy mountain with glazed greenhouses for the cultivation of fig trees. The fruits of the fig tree are probably known to all Europeans, but in the winter they are traditionally widespread as sugar sweets, but the wood of this tree or shrub is a true exot, which is rarely processed. The pale yellow wood of the fig tree is not very hard, light and quite elastic, because of its low shrinkage it was often used for painting panels, and for carvings.
