Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is the hardest and heaviest native wood, its great strength is legendary. Besides that the wood is really very bright, only holly wood may be a little bit brighter. The traditional use of hornbeam wood is for all sorts of tools, posts, beams and even railway sleepers were made from this wood.
