Redwood (Vavona) Burls (Sequoia sempervirens) come from the huge Californian coastal redwood trees, where the burls are often found at the base of the trunk. Many of these gigantic trees reach a biblical age of up to 2000 years and grow up to 110 meters high under good conditions on the coast of California. The wild-grained wood, which is often referred to as vavona, is very light (approx. 450 kg/m3) and relatively soft, but is extremely durable and weather-resistant, far superior to our native oak. The wood often comes from the stumps of trunks felled around 1900 - the root stumps of such giants remain completely undecayed in the ground; today they are dug up and processed into precious burl pieces! for woodworkers!
This ultra decorative sculptural piece is at least 70 years old and has recently been discovered in a warehouse clearance!
