The sabina tree, savin juniper (Juniperus sabina) is a rather small tree or shrub from the juniper family. The tree is widespread in Europe, as it was widely planted for its medicinal uses. In the past, it was often referred to as the seven tree, stinking or savin juniper or poison juniper and used to play an important role in folk medicine as a versatile supplier of leaves (needles), berries, juices and extracts for medicinal applications and as a highly valued supplier of high-quality wood. Its wood is yellowish-grey-brown and develops a reddish-brown to red-violet core. The wood exudes a very pleasant aromatic-spicy scent and is therefore highly resistant to insects. It dries slowly, is soft and fine-grained and usually has a straight grain.
