Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), also known as Tasmanian blackwood or Acacia blackwood, originates from Tasmania in eastern Australia. The tree has been introduced to many countries around the world and also grows in southern Europe. It grows to a height of 20-30 meters and a thickness of approx. 60-100 cm. The wood varies greatly in color. Contrary to what its name suggests, it is not black at all, but usually medium brown to reddish brown, similar to its close relative Koa (Acacia koa), to which it is very similar in its characteristics. Blackwood can sometimes be confusingly similar to European walnut. The wood has a surprisingly silky sheen and is one of the most lustrous woods in the world. When viewed from different angles, it displays a strong luster on planed surfaces, giving it a very elegant and distinguished appearance. Decorative growth forms such as burl, interlocked grain, or interlocked grain are highly sought after and valued. The wood is a cost-effective alternative to rare Hawaiian koa. Australian blackwood is used for veneers, furniture, musical instruments, woodturning, and other wood objects.
