Amboyna (Pterocarpus indicus) red narra, New Guinea rosewood, angsana: all these names refer to a beautiful tall evergreen tree that grows in SE Asia, the Philippines, Borneo, New Guinea, Cagayan, Mindoro, Palawan, Cotabato and the Malay archipelago. It is the national tree of the Philippines. The heartwood shows beautiful luster and has a very pleasant fragrant odor, the colour is an unbelievable intensive deep shiny fiery red, inferior qualities are yellow or brown, surrounded by straw-pale sapwood. The wood is quite hard, dense and very durable, yet easy to work with hand tools. Burls of narra trees, formerly exported from the Indonesian seaport Ambon, are well known all over the world for their highly figured red burls with finest swirly grain and flawless large surfaces. It was always reserved for finest luxury applications, Rolls Royce and Maybach for example had amboyna burl veneered interiors. Amboyna burl is probably the rarest and most expensive wood in the world, fetching ferocious prices....If you work on a piece of this noble wood, you will know why this is the world's most beautiful and brilliant wood!
