American black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) naturally grow in the eastern part of north America, their wood is usually much darker than that of European walnut trees. The heartwood is dark, streaked and straight grained, sometimes showing a bluish hue, the sapwood being grayish to yellow coloured. Quite commonly American rootstocks were grafted with European scions for more fruits, on these parts of the mature stem sometimes large burls grow, that develop beautiful and most decorative wood, that is highly prized for car interiors, furniture and handicrafts. Black walnut burls show wavy or swirly irregular grain, the wood colour is dark brown with nearly black streaks, sometimes mixed up with bright sapwood, the range of apperance is nearly endless. The wood polishes excellent, having high natural durability.
