Amaranth (Peltogyne paniculata), also known as purple or violet wood, comes from Surinam, Guyana and Mexico. Freshly cut, it is initially dull grey, but this color of the freshly cut wood quickly changes to a beautiful, deep purple when exposed to air and light. The wood is very hard, dense and very heavy. Because it is quite rare and therefore precious, it is only used for the highest quality small and fine woodwork. Please don't be surprised if the wood initially looks grey after processing: the beautiful color will return on its own after a day at the window!
