Thuya burl wood comes from the Sandarac tree (Tetraclinis articulata), a coniferous tree only growing in the Atlas mountains of northern Africa, Morocco and Algeria. The tree also produces Sandarac, an aromatic resin used for varnishes, polishes and for incense purposes. The wood colour varies from a rich, lustrous golden brown to dark brown, nearly black. Thuya burl wood is hard and dense with a high natural oil and resin content, that smells very pleasant and makes working very easy and a real pleasure for the craftsman.Thuya trees along with cedars and others once covered the Atlas Mountains, but due to overcutting and clearing fires, large areas have been treeless for hundreds of years, making this wood very scarce and expensive. You will get the depicted blank.
