Pau Santo (Zollernia paraensis) has lots of common names like Brazilian blackheart, Enemy, Coracao de negro, Palo Santo (Spanish) und grows only in the Para region of north eastern Brazil. The fairly small tree grows up to 20 - 35 meters gaining diameters of ca. 50 cms only. The wood is really extremely hard and dense, specific weight is 1,30 when dry. Freshly cut the very narrow grained wood shows yellow, green up to brown colour, that darkens to a dark brown gray or nearly black colour when aging. freshly cut wood looks like lignum vitae wood and has the same waxy grip, but in fact is not related at all to the guaiacum family. Due to its limited availability this rare wood is hard to find in the market.
