Rowan, also known as mountain-ash (Sorbus aucuparia) is a widely spread tree all over Europe. The medium sized tree develops remarkable orange red berries in autumn and attracts lots of birds by means of these. The wood is quite dense (ca. 700 - 850 kg/m3), it is used for turning, children's toys, carving, tool handles and walking sticks. The heartwood is dark dull brown, sharply contrasting against pale yellow sapwood and works very well.
