Briar, Bruyere (Erica arborea) is wood from the root burl of a heather shrub, that grows in Mediterranean regions. These burls grow beneath ground level, as they form a part of the plants watering system. They are dug out, and seldom beeing mor than footballs size, sometimes show very fine grain and beautiful structure. The wood is very hard, highly resistant to fire and does not change the taste of the tobacco, thus it is the perfect wood for smoking pipes. The wood is boiled 12 to 24 hours to remove any sap or oils that might flavour the taste of the pipe.
