Peroba Rosa, (Aspidosperma polyneuron) is the name given to the wood of a tree growing in southern Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina, which is also known in its growing region as palo rosa, peroba-miúda, peroba amargosa. The tree grows large, stately specimens grow to a height of around 35 metres and often have a diameter of 1.50 metres.
The wood of these trees is very hard, heavy (approx. 800-900 kg/m3) and dense, yet practically non-porous, fine and even, strongly reminiscent of native pear trees.
The colour of the heartwood ranges from yellow to pinkish red, sometimes interspersed with darker stripes of violet or light brown. The yellow sapwood is not sharply demarcated from the heartwood, the colour darkens with age.
The old Dutch name 'Zalmhout' for Peroba Rosa refers to the salmon pinkish colour of the wood, often the colour is actually very similar to salmon flesh. Stairs, panelling, turnery, mouldings: in its natural growing area, the wood is often used to build houses because of its high durability. In Europe it is almost too good for this, the fine wood is easy to work, it has an extremely friendly warm light colour and is known for its wide range of applications: furniture, veneers, (parquet) floors, it is used as a substitute for cherry wood in the parquet industry. It is also predestined for writing utensils, knife handles, flutes and other handicraft applications!
