Mopane, Mopani (Colophospermum mopane) wood is one of southern Africas heaviest and densest timbers, with a specific density of ca. 1,3 t/m3 it is very durable and resistant to nearly all influences. The wood is difficult to work on because of the extreme hardness. The heartwood, contrasting against pale yellow sapwood, ranges from medium to dark reddish brown with black stripes, its clour is darkening with age. Due to its good tonal qualities mopane is increasingly being used for woodwind instruments, it has become somewhat expensive over the years. We dug out a small bulk of this rare wood from an old stock of a wood trader and are glad to be able to offer this wood to wood collectors and instrument makers.
