Black poplar trees (Populus nigra) sometimes develop irregular abnormal trunk growth forms with hundreds of burls scattered all over the trees stem. This results in very attractive wood texture, the creamy white coloured wood being nearly completely covered with nests of brown to reddish brown small knots. The trees need a lot of water to grow, so most black poplars are found in moist meadowland along the Rhine and other rivers up to the north of France. This very fine and rich burly wood is very decorative and easy to work with. Due to its softness always use sharp tools! After polishing an astonishing look will appear, the curly grain looks like silken fabric dropped on a surface, changing colour from any angle you look at it- this is extremely beautiful with turned objects!
