Karelian curly birch, also called karelian masur birch (Betula pendula var. carelica) comes from northeastern Finland and Russia, where this rare wood is highly appreciated and sought after. The attractive irregularity in structure only appears in a few logs among hundreds normal figured birch trees and is highly prized by scandinavian artisans. Usually the logs are quite short and thin. Due to its rarity the wood is paid by weight in Finland, Sweden and Russia. Fine figured wood is the main material for Scandinavian knifes and timeless precious handcrafted objects.
