Gmelina (Gmelina arborea) is in its native range Malay, Burma, Vietnam also known as yemane, gamhar or gomari. The fast growing trees easily reach 30 m height, their beautiful shape provides lots of shade, there for the trees are widely spread for ornament and shade. Today these trees are widely introduced as a forestry tree nearly all over the world, huge plantations in south America, Africa and Australia benefit from fast growth and a wide range of purposes for the wood of theses trees. Heartwood ist pale yellow with nearly no contrast to sapwood, moderately coarse, lustrous, its limited durability combined with medium weight (ca. 500 - 600 kg/m3 dry) makes it well suited for indoor use. The range of applications is really huge: from doors and windows, furniture, flooring, construction work to musical instruments and fine turnings. The Lion Throne, the most important and last surviving of the eight royal thrones of Myanmar, now in the National Museum in Yangon, is carved from Gmelina arborea wood.
