Linden trees, winter or summer lime (Tilia parvifolia, Tilia grandifolia) differ only slightly in wood. Linden trees are widespread, originally coming from Northern and Central Europe, they are common in America and even in Northern Asia. The trees can become very old, 1000 year old specimens are known. The wood of the lime tree is almost white, yellowish or rarely also reddish-white, although soft and usually shows little grain, but has excellent properties such as a particularly good durability with great lightness. Thus the wood of the lime tree is very common in everyday life, but it is only consciously perceived as wood for sculptural work because it has gained an outstanding position there: it can be carved very well, detailed forms are possible in lime wood, so many sacral sculptures have been carved from this wood since the Gothic period. These pieces are from an old stock, stored dry since 1985.
