Box elder or ash-leaved maple (Acer negundo) originally comes from North America and now is spread all over central Europe. The wood shows white, creamy to light brown colour with very characteristic reddish streaks, that occur after fungal attacks by Fusarium negundi. These pieces may have soft punky spots, that can be worked with only after stabilization processing. The wood is quite soft, the burls show very fine irregular tight grain patterns. The grain can be enhanced by staining and sanding. Stains penetrate the irregular figured wood more deeply than straight grained wood and the result is a darker figure against a light background. Spectacularly figured and wild coloured burl slab!
