Kauri wood comes from New Zealands unique giant Kauri tree (Agathis australis) and belongs to the Araucariaceae plant family. The tree grows extremely slow, it usually takes 100 to 150 years to reach 10 m height and form a treetop. Mature trees can reach 50 meters height, diameters of 5-6 meters are normal for really old trees, being 200 to 500 years old. Kauri trees formed huge forests all over New Zealand.
The stems of old Kauri trees are not tapered and perfectly straight, no knots from branches or irregular grain make this wood perfect for a lot of uses- but it became nearly extinct due to its perfect properties. With the beginning industrialization around 1860 nearly all big trees were felled and processed for floorings, construction timbers, ships, furniture and even crates. Since the 1950s kauri trees are protected and preserved in the Waipoua sanctuary. The wood ist light (500 kg/m3) but very strong and durable and was traditionally used by the Maoris for their canoes, the wakas. It is a really hard to find wood today.
