Kingwood (Dalbergia cearensis) also called violetwood comes from north-eastern Brazil (from Ceará and southern Bahia) and is one of the classical rare and precious woods in the rosewood family. The trees only develop small stems with a maximum of ca. 30-45 cm diameter. The colour is vivid and luminous violet that can even approach royal blue with fine stripes of black contrasting against creamy white sapwood, usually straight grained. Kingwood is excellent for fine wood turning and carving, as well as inlays, sculpture and woodwind instruments. It works very well and finishes to an exceptionally smooth natural finish.
