Grenadill, African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) ist often mistakenly considered as a kind of ebony, but it belongs to the rosewood family. It comes mainly from Mozambique, Africa. Colour is dark purplish brown with black streaks, giving a nearly black effect. It is an exceptionally dense, very hard and heavy (ca. 1400 kg/m3) wood, slightly oily with fine texture. It finishes exceptionally well but really it does not require any finish. These flawless blanks are tonewood quality. The photos show planed pieces, you will receive partially waxed pieces like shown in the last photo! These scantlings come from a shelf find of old stock that has been stored for at least 10 years. In the next few years there will be no more new African blackwood items, because the export has been severely restricted by legal regulations.
