Demerara Greenheart (Ocotea rodiaei, syn. Chlorocardium rodiei) comes from Guyana, Surinam and northern Brazil and is an extremely hard, tough and durable wood. There are lots of names for it according to its port of origin, like Bibiru, Sipiri, Kevatuk in Guyana, Beeberoe, Groenhart, and Sipiroe in Surinam. The heartwood is pale olive-greenish; it is seldom that black logs appear, this abnormal dark wood is called black greenheart. The wood is very heavy (ca 1200 kg/m3 dry), has a fine grain and shows luster. It is somewhat difficult to work on account of its density. The wood is used for docks and ship construction, industrial flooring, heavy construction, turnery, and specialty items like fishing rods, billiard cue butts and smoking pipes. Freshly cut, the wood has an intensely aromatic scent of nutmeg. These blocks come from very old stock and are dry, but may contain hairline cracks as usual for extremely dense and hard wood.
