Fumed or smoked oak wood (Quercus robur) very much looks like bog oak without having its disadvantages: This flawless wood was smoked in an industrial process in ammonia all the way through to the heartwood, the natural contained tannic acid is reacting with ammonia gas to reveal this unique deep dark colour, that usually would take thousands of years to develop. This process is very much alike the natural process under water. The advantage of smoked oak is a really flawless wood quality without any cracks, decay or rotten areas as usually occur in bog oak.
