Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa, D. tucurensis) comes in imited quantities only from Costa Rica and Nicaragua to Europe. The heartwood is orangered to dark brown, attractivly contrasting with the pale yellow sapwood and is most beautifully grained by black veins. The wood is very hard and dense. Its main use is for for tool and knife handles, musical instruments (fretboards, woodwind instruments), walking sticks and brush handles. The most attractive grain and color have made Cocobolo one of the most sought after rosewood timbers. The surface already gets shiny by only fine grinding and polishing, very good surfaces can be achieved. Cocobolo is an outstanding luxury wood for knife handles and small turnerys.
