The Common Juniper shrub (Juniperus communis) is spread all over the Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic south to North America, Europe and Asia. It has the largest range of any woody plant. Nearly all peoples of the world knew junipers, already the Egyptians used its precious wood for furniture and Sarcophagus, also the plant plays an important role on tombs: Juniper plants should lead the decedents from their former life to a new life one day. The wood is due to the plants slow growth extremely fine grained, very durable, its heartwood is reddish with creamy white sapwood. The wood has an outstanding ability of resisting decay and insects, therefore it was widely used for fence posts. The most precious and rare wood has always been highly esteemed for small works, turnings and carvings, but as common junipers very seldom grow up to real trees size of ca. 4-5 meters the wood stays rare. Everybody working on this wood will be rewarded with one of the most pleasant scents that wood can have - a very rich, aromatic and lasting scent that reminds of incense.
