Bayur or Wadang Burl (Pterospermum javanicum) is the burl wood of a tree growing in Indonesia, especially on the east coast of Java, which is rarely available on the international timber market. It has been spread to other South East Asian countries, where it is called Nwalabyin (Myanmar), Melerang or Letop-letop (Sabah, Malaysia).
The tree grows to a height of approx. 30-45 metres, often grows crooked and splayed, becomes approx. 100 cm thick and its wood is medium hard and medium heavy, approx. 600 - 700 kg/m3. Because of its unfamiliarity it is often described as Redburl wood.
The wood is found in huge burls, which can often reach a diameter of 1.50 meters and always have a fine and even grain, fine whorls, eyes, sleeping buds and wild structures.
The wood is very easy to work with, due to its fine structure it is easy to work with and will surprise every woodworker after an application of oils with its silky shimmer and an attractive red colour!
Small holes, hairline cracks, gum pockets and bark inclusions as common with all burls may be filled easily and quick with thin super glue and saw dust.
