Western Red Box Burl (Eucalyptus polyanthemos) is a hard to find rarity from Australia. The trees grow to decent heights of 20-25 meters and are found sporadically in the east and southeast dry forests of New South Wales and Victoria. Burls are very rare on this species and are difficult to find. The heartwood is pink to orange-red, but can also be an intense brown-red, sharply demarcated from the pale yellow to gray sapwood. A special feature is the rapid color change during felling: initially the heartwood is deep carmine red and the sapwood yellow. However, both fade to amber color within a few minutes. The wood of the burls is very dense and usually has incredible grains and colors, but many of the rare burls are very heavily cracked, which makes them very difficult to use. In this case, the slices are exceptionally almost flawless, unfortunately there are only very few slabs of this beautiful wood.
