Paela, also known in Mexico as Chakte Viga is the name of a rather small tree (Caesalpinia platyloba), that is growing up to approximately 6 - 9 feet height in Mexico and Central America. This wood is highly esteemed for its unique color and great resistance.
The wood is very close-grained, showing very fine structure and grain and works very well in spite of its great hardness and density. It impresses with its truly unique dazzling deep and intense yellow-orange to orange-red colour, that is resistant to aging and sometimes shows a red hue. The wood is very close to a famous relative called brazilwood, pernambuco (Caesalpinia echinata), which is today almost impossible to obtain because of its excellent mechanical properties and characteristics. This was the first choice wood for string bows for centuries and the tree nearly became extinct due to overharvesting.
Chakte Viga, paela or Mexican fernambuk has the same excellent characteristics so it does not need to hide behind its famous relative. This fine interlocked figure makes great effect for knife scales!
